How to recognise a quality business website: design, speed and mobile-first

TL;DR

A quality business website is consistent and clear, loads quickly, is comfortable to use on a phone and accessible to people with impaired vision. It has a clear introduction, services, examples of work, answers to common questions and easy-to-find contact details.

Why does a business need a quality website?

Answer

A website is often a customer's first contact with your business. Good design and a fast, clear page build trust before the customer picks up the phone.

I build websites for businesses in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and abroad, and the whole collaboration takes place online. Customers today compare several businesses at once, and the first impression of a website often decides who they write to or call. If you are looking for someone to build one for you, have a look at my services.

If you want to see what your new website could look like, I will send you a free website design. In this article I focus on how to recognise a quality website.

A website is a place that belongs only to you. You can show your work there, introduce your team and explain what makes you different. Its look, speed and clarity say as much about a business as the text itself.

How is a website built?

Answer

A website is built in five steps: an initial conversation, a visual design, content preparation, development with testing and launch on your domain.

  1. Initial conversation: we find out what you do, for whom, what the website should achieve and which style suits you.
  2. Visual design: within 2 working days I prepare a design that you see before any programming starts, and we fine-tune it to your liking.
  3. Content: text, photos, services and frequently asked questions. I help with structure and wording.
  4. Development and testing: I code the website and test it on mobile, tablet and desktop in different browsers. A simple website usually goes live within 7 days of the design being approved and the materials delivered.
  5. Launch: I deploy the website to your domain, check its speed and hand it over to you.

The whole collaboration can be handled online by email and video call. All I need is a few sentences about what your website should contain.

What makes website design high quality?

Answer

Good design is consistent, clear and fits your business. It uses space, readable typography, consistent colours and good photos that guide the eye to what matters.

Good design is not about effects but about clarity. Within a few seconds a visitor should understand where they are, what you offer and what to do next.

Signs of good design

  • Consistent visual style: colours, fonts and shapes match your logo and business.
  • Visual hierarchy: the most important information stands out most.
  • Enough space: content has room to breathe and is not crammed.
  • Readable typography: a suitable font size and line length.
  • Good photos: ideally your own, showing your work and people.
  • Clear buttons: an obvious call to get in touch or book.
  • Subtle animations: they bring the page to life without distracting.

Why does website speed matter and how is it achieved?

Answer

A slow website puts people off, especially on mobile data. Speed comes from optimised images, clean code, a minimum of unnecessary scripts and good hosting.

A visitor waits only a few seconds for a page to load. A fast website looks professional and people stay on it longer.

How speed is achieved

  1. Images in modern formats and the right size for each device.
  2. Lazy loading of images further down the page.
  3. Clean, lightweight code without unnecessary plugins.
  4. A minimum of external scripts that slow down loading.
  5. Good hosting and a secure HTTPS connection.

How should a website work on mobile and what is accessibility?

Answer

A website must be as comfortable on a phone as on a computer: readable text, large buttons, a simple menu. Accessibility means the website can also be used by people with impaired vision or by those navigating with a keyboard.

Most visits today come from phones. The mobile version is therefore not an add-on but the foundation the design grows from.

Mobile version

  • a responsive layout that adapts to any screen,
  • buttons large enough to tap comfortably with a finger,
  • a phone number that can be dialled directly,
  • a menu that does not cover the content and closes easily.

Accessibility

  • sufficient contrast between text and background,
  • image descriptions for screen readers,
  • full keyboard control of the website,
  • clear headings and page structure.

How can you test website quality yourself in 10 minutes?

Answer

Open the website on your phone using mobile data, find the phone number and price list, submit the form, try navigating with the keyboard and check the result in Google PageSpeed Insights.

You do not need to be a programmer to assess a website. You can check most things with an ordinary phone and browser. The table shows simple tests, what to look for and what a good result looks like.

TestHow to do itGood resultWarning sign
Mobileopen the website on a phone using mobile datatext is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to hitcontent runs off the screen, the menu covers text
Speedenter the address into Google PageSpeed InsightsCore Web Vitals metrics are in the green zonea long wait for the first content, elements shifting while loading
Contacttry to find the phone number and email within 10 secondscontact is in the menu and footer, the number can be dialled with a tapcontact is only in an image or buried deep in subpages
Formsend a test messagea confirmation appears and the message reaches the inboxthe form reports an error or the message never arrives
Keyboardmove through the website with the Tab keyyou can see where you are and open the menufocus is not visible, some elements cannot be operated
Securitylook at the address barthe address starts with https and the browser shows no warningthe browser warns about an insecure connection

If a website fails several tests at once, that is a good reason to consider changes or a new website. If it fails only one, a targeted fix is often enough.

What should a quality business website contain?

Answer

A clear introduction to what you do, an overview of services, examples of work or references, answers to common questions and contact details with a map and opening hours.

  • a clear headline right at the top saying what you do and for whom,
  • an overview of services with a short description and the benefit to the customer,
  • examples of work, references or certificates,
  • an introduction of the team or owner,
  • answers to frequently asked questions,
  • contact details, address, map and opening hours,
  • a contact form with spam protection,
  • information on personal data protection and cookies.

Which features can be added to a website?

Answer

Depending on the industry, online bookings, a configurator or calculator, a client area or automated enquiry handling are useful. All of them can be added later.

A website does not have to be complex from day one. It is sensible to start with a quality presentation and add features as needed:

How should a website handle several branches or markets?

Answer

The same approach works for a small local business and a company selling to several countries. The website should state clearly where you operate and how customers can contact you.

Many businesses do not operate in just one place, and the website should show this clearly: with a list of areas or countries, a map and contact details. If you target customers abroad, a language version of the website helps. With several branches, a separate subpage for each one with its own opening hours and contacts is useful.

What belongs in the basic SEO of a business website?

Answer

A unique title and description for every page, a logical heading structure, image descriptions, a sitemap, fast loading, HTTPS and structured data about the business.

SEO, or search engine optimisation, is often sold as a complicated service. Yet the basics every quality business website should have are technical and can be checked:

  • Page title and description: every subpage has its own, concise and not too long.
  • Headings: one main heading per page with logically ordered subheadings below it.
  • Image descriptions: alternative text helps both search engines and screen readers.
  • Sitemap: a sitemap.xml file that shows search engines all important pages.
  • Structured data: the business name, address and contact in machine-readable form.
  • Speed and mobile: search engines also rate pages by how they work on a phone.

These basics will not guarantee first place in search results, but without them a website struggles far more. Further growth comes mainly from good content that answers your customers' questions and an up-to-date Google business profile.

How do you prepare for working together?

Answer

Prepare a list of services, a few websites you like, your logo, photos and contact details. The more materials you have, the faster the website is ready.

  1. A list of services and what sets you apart from others.
  2. Two or three websites whose look you like.
  3. Your logo and brand colours, if you have them.
  4. Your own photos of premises, team or work.
  5. Contact details, address and opening hours.
  6. Access to your domain, or a choice of a new one.
